On the day that marks the 35th anniversary of the inauguration of the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion reconstruction, we invite you to the presentation of “The Expression of Weight“ by Luís Martínez Santa-María. A book born as a result of the intervention that the author carried out on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of its reconstruction, along with Roger Sauquet. His proposal “I don’t want to change the world. I only want to express it” was the one selected in the international contest “Fear of Columns” for the temporary recreation of the pre-existing columns in the original Pavilion.
Eight columns made of barrels that were inaugurated on June 1 and dismantled in early October 2016, which synthesised the aesthetics of the vertical component of the pre-existing columns in contrast with the horizontality of the Pavilion, reflecting an awareness of the reuse of resources and expressing the provisionality of these columns that disappeared in contrast to a pavilion that re-emerged. The barrels stood off the ground and rested on a shadow as a tribute to the care taken by Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich in resolving the role of the Pavilion and to their way of making weight manifest itself so that the pillars become singular elements and cease to be seen as structural.
“The expression of weight” unravels the author’s thoughts and gathers diverse examples of how artists and architects find ways of carrying the burdens, the weights, the obligations and all the gravitational aspects that are the inherent responsibility of architecture.
We will be able to enjoy Luís Martínez de Santa-María’s thoughts on the long process of gestation of this publication, and to recall the extraordinary artistic intervention that originated it, live at the Pavilion and via streaming.
