Architecture Week aims to promote the exchange of views and to provide innovative perspectives about the world of architecture and its future scenarios. This is why the city is hosting debates, talks and lectures featuring prominent figures from the world of architecture over the course of these days.
The Week is full of 100% architectural experiences that will culminate on 26 May with a big finale: the delivery of the Mies van der Rohe Awards and celebrations open to one and all.
The Fundació Mies van der Rohe will participate with the following events:
EU MIES AWARD DAY
EU Mies Award Day kicks off with a free day of debates and lectures on housing, memory and identity, heritage and architecture that will be held in the Palau de Victòria Eugènia.
EU MIES AWARD CEREMONY
EU Mies Award Day continues in the evening with the delivery of the Mies van der Rohe Award in the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion (street address: Avenida de Francesc Ferrer i Guàrdia, 7, Montjuïc), followed by Architecture Week’s closing celebrations, where everyone is invited.
Organised by the COAC, the celebrations will take place on the esplanade of the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc. The architectural containers of the exhibition ‘Made in Europe’ will serve as ‘props’ for the festivities. These containers will have been set up in the 10 districts of Barcelona and in Plaça Europa in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat.
“MADE IN EUROPE”
From 19 to 23 May, the exhibition ‘Made in Europe’ will be set up in the heart of each district of Barcelona. The exhibition looks back at the construction of Europe in the last 30 years by means of the most important architecture highlighted by the Fundació Mies van der Rohe through its awards.
In order to expose the neighbourhoods to architecture, ‘Made in Europe’ will be located in 10+1 containers distributed in the 10 districts of the city of Barcelona. The eleventh container will be set up in Plaça Europa in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat for the trade fair Barcelona Building Construmat.
Inside each container you will find architectural models related to a specific theme: administrative, cultural, sports, entertainment, office buildings and more. The containers will also include maps so you can discover the most influential architecture in your neighbourhood.
EU MIES AWARD 2017 EXHIBITION
The exhibition of the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture 2017 may be seen in the Palau de Victòria Eugènia. Videos, texts, images and the models of the shortlisted and selected works explain the best architectural projects built in Europe in the last two years.
In keeping with the desire to enjoy and spread knowledge about good architecture, the Fundació Mies van der Rohe has prepared an app so that everyone can view all the works nominated in this year’s edition of the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award in their mobile phone and find out exactly where they are and how to get there.
In addition to the works nominated for the 2017 edition, the cities of Berlin, London, Dublin, Paris and Barcelona have included all the works nominated in every edition.
The EU Mies Award app suggests routes and provides the option to propose new routes. Users may also indicate their favourite routes and read information about each of the works.
