The Visiting Universities Mexico program in Barcelona and London offers since 2010 the opportunity to generate design proposals as research to carry out projects in the city during the month of July.
In the 2021 edition and in collaboration with the Fundació Mies van der Rohe and the Escola Tècnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona (ETSAB-UPC) the program focuses on the investigation of the territory and urban systems, of the economies and ecologies that make up the waterfront of Barcelona and offers a professional environment and a collaborative atmosphere that allows sharing experiences with other international students.
The workshop consists of two workshops and a field trip:
-Workshop of design as research (DRS) projects, led by Juan Carlos Sánchez Tappan (SOFAR) in collaboration with Jordi Castelló (BR) will explore the Zoo platform, a strategic site proposed by Barcelona Regional (BR) that aims to finish linking the waterfront The “hyper-vertical” workshop will work in teams of 2-3 students from different universities. (56h teaching)
– Urban systems research seminar, conducted by ETSAB – Fundació Mies van der Rohe, will analyze the parameters that determine the coastline and the actors that define it. Based on the online archive of the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award and the Architectures on the Waterfront publication, the coastal fronts of 8 European cities will be analyzed. (32h teaching)
–Field trip to London that will allow to contrast other territories with aquatic front and will offer the opportunity to know alternative processes of investigation and design through visits to schools and studies of architecture of the city. (24h teaching)
