This edition of Cinema al Pavelló, entitled “Barcelona” and presented as part of Barcelona 2026 World Capital of Architecture, focuses on combining film screenings with a reflection on the city of Barcelona as a living setting and a witness to history. The selected films showcase the city through a variety of perspectives and time periods: from 1960s Barcelona in Los Tarantos, to the Barcelona of the 1990s shaped by tourism and social transformation in Costa Brava (Family Album), and finally to contemporary Barcelona, observed through a documentary lens in Sis dies corrents.
The added value of the programme lies in several key aspects: first, the city itself as the main protagonist; second, the combination of historical, social, cultural, and architectural perspectives; third, the programme’s ability to foster dialogue between collective memory and the urban imagination; and finally, the way the selected films invite reflection on issues such as social inequality, urban transformation, cultural diversity, and everyday experiences. This makes the programme much more than a series of screenings: it is an opportunity to rediscover Barcelona through cinema, learn from its history, and explore the narratives that shape the way the city is perceived today
Los Tarantos is a film that, beyond its initial commercial ambition, has become an essential portrait of a now-disappeared Romani Barcelona. Inspired by Romeo and Juliet and Blood Wedding, it tells the story of an impossible love between two feuding families, with flamenco as its emotional language. The neighbourhood of Somorrostro is depicted with striking realism, elevating the film to the status of a historical document. Carmen Amaya shines in a memorable performance. The work weaves together music, dance, and social critique to explore themes of identity, inequality, and cultural resistance.
