Pavelló de Música: Of Light and Shadow, Christina Meißner

Together with the Fundación Goethe, the Fundació Mies van der Rohe is holding a new session of the Pavelló de Música and we invite you to come and enjoy music in the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion, a space that makes it special.

The protagonist of this evening, Christina Meißner, is a highly trained cellist who has been giving solo concerts for more than twenty years, collaborating with internationally renowned composers. She has prepared a programme specially designed for this occasion, in which works by composers who are very distant in time find a link with the place where they are performed.

The programme for cello solo, conceived by Christina Meißner, goes back to the 12th century and at the same time to the present. It consists of contemporary compositions that (for the most part) refer to Hildegard von Bingen, a 12th century German composer and abbess, alternating with original melodies by the saintly composer.

The result is an intellectually and emotionally wonderful concert evening in which the sounds spread out into space, floating, to the quiet rhythm of breathing, creating a meditative and relaxed atmosphere. The old-new categories almost dissolve.

It is about experience, about letting go, about what is surprising in the seemingly familiar and about arriving and recognising in the unheard. The programme is enriched and complemented by music by Johann Sebastian Bach, very popular at the Bauhaus’ in-house soirées and a link to the rather conservative cultural bourgeoisie.
