Open doors – inauguration of the reconstruction anniversary

Like every first Sunday of the month, the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion opens its doors free of charge to everyone, but this time it is a special day because, in addition to being part of the Architecture Weeks, it coincides with the day on which the reconstruction of the Pavilion was inaugurated in 1986 .

The German Pavilion, originally built for the 1929 Barcelona International Exhibition, was rebuilt between 1983 and 1986 at the initiative of Oriol Bohigas and under the direction of the architects Cristian Cirici, Fernando Ramos and Ignasi de Solà- Morales, and the collaboration of Isabel Bachs.

The reconstruction was a meticulous job, supported by historical documents, photographs and witnesses of the time which motivated the creation of the Fundació Mies van der Rohe initially to carry out the reconstruction and which is now in charge of its maintenance in addition to dissemination tasks, among which the program of artistic interventions in the Pavilion and the organization of the EUmies Awards stand out

On June 2, 1986, the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion was inaugurated as a tribute to modern architecture and as part of Barcelona’s cultural legacy. The opening event was attended by various local and international authorities, including members of Mies van der Rohe’s family, who paid tribute to his architectural legacy.
