Back to the seafront: architectures for the BCN Forum platform.
Workshop Barcelona – London. June 2021
The Visiting Universities Mexico program in Barcelona and London offers since 2010 the opportunity to generate design as research proposals to carry out projects in the city for one month.
In the 2021 edition Fundació Mies van der Rohe, Escola Tècnica Superior d’Arquitectura de Barcelona (ETSAB-UPC), SOFAR Studio of Architecture & Research and FUNDARQMX have joined efforts to offer an online program which focuses on the investigation of the territory and urban systems, of the economies and ecologies that make up the waterfront of Barcelona, and offers a professional environment and a collaborative atmosphere that allows sharing experiences with other international students:
The program includes a design workshop, a research seminar and a virtual field trip:
– Design Research Studio (DRS): a workshop based on design as research projects, led by Juan Carlos Sánchez Tappan, co-founder of SOFAR Studio for Architecture & Research in collaboration with Barcelona Regional – Agència de Desenvolupament Urbà experts Josep Bohigas, director and Jordi Castelló, urban projects manager. Students will explore the Zoo platform strategic site with the aim of finishing the linking of the Barcelona waterfront. In this “hyper-vertical” workshop, participants will work in teams of 2-3 students from different universities. (56h teaching)
– Urban systems research seminar: jointly conducted by ETSAB professors and Fundació Mies van der Rohe expert collaborator Celia Marín, co-author of the Atlas of European Contemporary Architecture, students will analyse the parameters that determine an urban coastline as a waterfront and the actors that define it. Based on the online archive of the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award and the publication Architectures on the Waterfront, the seminar will focus on coastal fronts of 9 European cities. (32h teaching)
–Virtual field trips to London that will allow contrasting the architecture and urban design on the banks of the river Thames to other territories’ waterfronts and will offer the opportunity to know alternative processes of investigation and design through online lectures by Alfredo Ramirez, director of the landscape urbanism program at the Architectural Association; Paulo Flores, associate director at Zaha Hadid; Amparo Galván, senior architct at ARUP; among others. (24h teaching)
The program is aimed at students of architecture, urbanism or design from 4th semester onwards.
